Yeah right! – like I can play Golf 🙂   …

I started off having a few lessons after spending some time on the Driving Range with my brother-in-law. I enjoyed it enough to give it a go and started going to a local Driving Range and had a course of lessons. Unfortunately a long standing injury has put my plans on hold until later on in the summer.

  • 6th Golf Lesson…now we’re making progress! July 12, 2009 misterjaytee

From doing my 1st lesson in March, and having a few too many breaks (OU and Festivals taking up my time), I’ve now done some more lessons.

And for whatever reason, today something clicked – recognising when you’re about to do something wrong before you hit the ball is quite a satisfying experience (as long as you bail out and don’t hit the ball!). When I did hit the ball with my trusty 7 iron, it was going fairly straight and covering the distance – too often I can do one or the other but never consistently getting both.

Today was different after I’d warmed up with a few shots – my driving was working well and I was quite satisfied that I’d put in a good effort and produced the desired results.

Things haven’t picked up as quickly as I thought they would though, and we’re still on the Driving range, but I’ve booked some 1 hour lessons now and a couple of short rounds of golf – we’re expecting to put all the learning together over the next few weeks with some practice on the short game, and then by the end of August we’ll be off round the course to do this for real.

Not sure why I didn’t try to learn to play Golf before – it’s quite an enjoyable challenge. Anyone who thinks it’s easy should try to play and then see how easy it is (or not) 🙂

  • 1st Lesson Done March 29, 2009 misterjaytee

Did my first 30 minute lesson at Ombersley Golf Club today. The Pro teaching me was a bloke called Ashley, who took me through the basics; lining yourself up, distance from ball, grip, stance, posture, swing.

Having paid for 50 balls, you’re given a receipt with a pin number on it. Enter the pin number into the machine and out come 50 balls into the basket. Nice and easy 🙂

Anyway, after going through the posture and swing part, I got to hit a few balls. Missed with the first go, after having done 4 good practice swings. Second go, and I hit the ball over 100 yards – I’m not into a full swing yet, this will come later on in the lessons. Main thing is to get the ball hit and the positiong and movement right.

A few more goes of varying success, correcting posture and swing, and making sure I’m keeping my head still, and I’m hitting the balls beyond the 100 yard marker and down the middle. The odd time I get it wrong, and Ashley is correcting the mistake and we’re off again.

With 25 balls left, the lesson is over and I’m left alone to hit them, without the coaching, but trying to remember what I’ve been taught. At the end of it, my back’s a bit sore and the upper part of my left arm aches, but I’m happy with what I’ve achieved so far.

So, first lesson done, 5 lessons to go (from this batch), and I think I’m going to enjoy this game. Got to go back to the driving range and hit another 50 balls before the next lesson though.

  • 1st lesson next week 🙂 March 22, 2009 misterjaytee

I went to one of the local Golf courses yesterday and booked my first lessons with a golf Pro – first lesson is next weekend (clocks go forward so hope I don’t miss it!) …

…Then my little Sis rang me to say that they had been given some Golf Clubs by a friend and would I like them – what a coincidence 🙂
